How much does an MVP cost in 2026?
What an MVP really costs in 2026 with an AI builder, a freelancer, an agency in India or the US, or a fixed-price studio, and what moves the price.

Short answer: a production-ready MVP costs roughly $6,000 to $150,000 in 2026, depending on who builds it. AI app builders get you a demo for the price of a subscription, freelancers charge $5,000 to $30,000, Indian agencies $15,000 to $70,000, and US agencies $60,000 to $150,000 or more. Our fixed-price V1 Sprint is $6,000 to $12,000.
The range is wide because “MVP” means different things. This guide breaks down what you get at each price, what drives the number up, and how to avoid paying twice.
MVP cost by who builds it
| Who builds it | Typical cost | Time to launch | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI app builder (Lovable, Bolt, Replit, v0) | Subscription, plus your time | Days for a prototype | A working demo. Security, permissions and payments are up to you. |
| Freelancer | $5,000 – $30,000, often hourly | 4 – 12 weeks | Depends entirely on the person. |
| Agency in India | $15,000 – $70,000 | 6 – 16 weeks | A full team; quality varies widely between firms. |
| Agency in the US | $60,000 – $150,000+ | 3 – 6 months | Process, design and project management, at US rates. |
| v1build V1 Sprint | $6,000 – $12,000, fixed | 21 days | Sign-up, three core flows, one AI feature, admin, launch, two weeks of fixes. |
Agency and freelancer ranges come from published 2026 rate surveys (Metizsoft, and an independent engineer’s India-vs-US comparison). Hourly rates run about $25–$75 at Indian agencies and $125–$250 at US agencies, a three- to five-times gap for similar scope.
What actually moves the price
Five things decide most MVP budgets:
- Number of user types. A product with one kind of user is far simpler than a marketplace with buyers, sellers and admins.
- Integrations. Each connection to a payment provider, CRM, maps or messaging service adds work and testing.
- The AI feature. Calling a model is cheap to build. Making it reliable on your data, with tests and cost limits, is where the time goes.
- Design readiness. Finished designs lower the price. Starting from a napkin raises it.
- Deadline. Rushing below three weeks usually costs more and risks quality.
| Factor | Typical effect on a fixed-price sprint |
|---|---|
| Extra user type | +$1,000 – $2,000 |
| Integration beyond two | +$500 – $1,500 each |
| AI feature with its own data pipeline | +$1,000 – $3,000 |
| Designs already done | Lowers the price |
| Deadline under three weeks | Rush fee, if possible at all |
The hidden cost: building it twice
The most expensive MVP is the one you rebuild. A cheap first version that can’t handle real users, leaks data between accounts, or can’t be understood by the next developer usually gets thrown away within a year. That rebuild costs more than doing it properly the first time, and it costs you months.
The cheapest sensible path in 2026 is often:
- prototype with an AI builder for a few days to test the idea with users, then
- have a professional team either harden that prototype or rebuild the parts that matter.
Our prototype-to-production service exists for exactly that second step, from $3,000.
Hourly versus fixed price
Hourly billing puts the risk of delays on you. A fixed price puts it on the builder, which is why fixed prices come with a tightly written scope. If you go hourly, ask for a cap. If you go fixed, read the out-of-scope list as carefully as the in-scope one. We compare both in fixed price vs hourly.
Running costs after launch
Budget for these from day one:
| Item | Typical monthly cost for an early MVP |
|---|---|
| Hosting and database | $20 – $200 |
| AI model usage | Cents per user action; set a cap |
| Email, analytics, error tracking | $0 – $100 on starter plans |
| Maintenance and fixes | $1,000 – $2,500 if outsourced |
How to get an accurate number for your idea
Write down three things before you talk to anyone: who the users are, the three things they must be able to do on day one, and when you need it live. With that, any serious builder can give you a fixed quote. We send ours within 24 hours of a 25-minute call.
